Background

Willem van Lynden was born in 1985 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. He studied economics and obtained a bachelor’s degree in macroeconomics from Utrecht University and a master’s degree in International Economics from Erasmus University in Rotterdam. He started his own company MediaMaze in 2012, when he noticed the need for individuals and companies to get rid of unwanted search results for their names. A few years later, this need for individuals was also officially recognised in European law, with the addition of the right to erasure in the GDPR. Since then, Van Lynden has also assisted many clients through this legal route.

MediaMaze

MediaMaze was founded by Van Lynden in 2012 and is based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The company supports individuals and businesses in restoring, improving and protecting their online reputation, with a focus on search engines (search engine reputation management / SERM). The team uses a mix of SEO techniques, online PR, legal support and an extensive network.

The right to be forgotten

Since the adoption of the European right to be forgotten (right to erasure) in 2014, Willem van Lynden has submitted many hundreds of removal requests to search engines for his clients. Thanks in part to the additional support provided in any subsequent steps via the national Data Protection Agency or in court, these processes have been completed to a high degree of success. This leads to Van Lynden being the most experienced professional in The Netherlands with this relatively new law.

Stop Online Shaming Foundation

In addition to his work for MediaMaze, Willem van Lynden is active as treasurer of the Dutch foundation Stop Online Shaming. This foundation defends the interests of individuals whose privacy has been unlawfully violated online or who are victims of unlawful online expressions, including deep fakes, identity theft, revenge pornography and cyberbullying.

Media

Based on his years of experience with search engine reputation management and the right to be forgotten, as well as his role as spokesperson for the Stop Online Shaming Foundation, Van Lynden has been regularly asked to comment by media including The Guardian and Dutch national media like NOSRTL NieuwsBNRTrouw and NRC.
